One lamp, two functions: introducing AXION LAMP

A compact dual-function lamp combining wide-angle work-area lighting with directional warning signaling designed for class 2 requirements under ECE R65. The first prototype tests are behind us.

Our development department is working on AXION LAMP — a compact dual-function lamp that combines wide-angle work-area lighting with directional warning signaling designed for class 2 requirements under ECE R65. The first prototype tests are behind us, and they exceeded our assumptions in both photometric and thermal behavior. Below is a short account of why this lamp is being built and where the project stands.

Why combine work light with warning light?

On a rescue or special-purpose vehicle, every mounting point is precious. The upfitter has to fit 360° signaling, directional lights and work-area lighting onto a limited surface, plus all the wiring and control. In practice this means compromises: either less work light, or fewer signaling points, or a body crowded with separate devices.

Yet both tasks — illuminating the work zone and maintaining warning visibility — occur at the scene simultaneously. A night rescue operation, a crash on a fast road, service work after dark: the vehicle must be perfectly visible to oncoming traffic and at the same time light up the area where people are working. Combining both functions in one compact device simplifies the installation, reduces wiring and frees up space on the vehicle — without giving up either task.

Construction: an aluminum casting that is the heatsink

At the heart of the design is a large aluminum casting that serves as both the body and the heatsink. In high-power LED lamps, thermal management decides everything: the stability of luminous flux during long operation, the absence of brightness drop once the unit heats up, and the real service life of the diodes. The massive casting dissipates heat passively and easily withstands the working environment of a special-purpose vehicle: vibration, dust, water and road salt. It also gives the lamp a rigidity and mechanical resistance that no plastic housing can provide.

This is the area we verified first — and the thermal test results turned out better than the design assumptions. The lamp holds its photometric parameters in long operation with a margin that lets us approach the class 2 photometric requirements with confidence. We run the measurements in our own laboratory, with no intermediaries.

Target parameters

In the standard version the work light will deliver at least 2000 lumens — aimed at genuinely lighting the work area around the vehicle, not just at a catalog figure. The warning function is a directional light designed for category X in class 2 under UN Regulation No. 65 (target type-approval marking: XB2), meaning two intensity levels — a full signal legible in bright sunshine and a night mode that does not dazzle. What class 2 and the type-approval markings mean exactly is explained alongside our certificates.

Where does the project stand?

The first prototype tests in our own laboratory are behind us — photometric measurements and thermal testing confirmed that the design exceeds the project assumptions. We are currently sourcing components for the next phase, above all the final front lens, on which the final optics of both functions depend. The next steps are a prototype series in full configuration, type-approval testing and production preparation — entirely in-house, as with the rest of our products.

The prototype photographs in this entry show workshop units, still without the final front lens; the visualizations above show its design. The launch product may differ from both.

Who is this lamp for?

Primarily for upfitters of rescue and special-purpose vehicles: fire engines, technical and medical rescue vehicles, and services working at the roadside at night. Wherever vehicle visibility and work light matter at the same time — and space on the body is limited. AXION LAMP will complete our directional signaling range with a device it has been missing.
